Great Dane

Quaker Hill“s Get Serious

Owning a Great Dane means not just owning a big dog, but owning a GIANT dog. Well-trained Great Dane from a good genetic background can be an excellent pet in a home where the humans are knowledgeable and well prepared. Such a dog can become a family legend that you tell your grandchildren about. Danes seem to attract a lot of attention, even when they are just out for a walk with their owners. Even at dog shows where Great Danes are often seen, a really excellent specimen will attract the attention of viewers who would never classify themselves as Great Dane enthusiasts.

We sure are GD enthusiasts and it is obvious that our dogs live inside the house as a familymembers. Eventhough our dogs are mainly showdogs there is some working dogs among them. Obedience is a nice hobby and some Danes like DW Laodicea, DW Haakon and DW Lighthouse, DW Prince surprised us with their spark.

When talking about the family pet or a potential showdog - it is important to mention not only the good looks but the temperament and health. Great Danes are huge dogs - and that means that their temperament must be steady. Any aggressive, shy or nervous act is very incorrect ! Health problems are very often metabolic or inherited. No animal with serious fault should be used for breeding. Our breeding program consists carefull feeding and lots of love - and we also test our breedigstock : Hips, elbows and heart automatically, eyes and thyroid in most cases as they are little more common in some colors than in others.

SOME KENNEL HISTORY

Kennel Dogiwogin (also known as DW) was established in the late end of 80`s, little bit after we bought our first dog. We studied several breeds before we decided what kind of dog we both liked. We purchased our first Dane in 1988 called Katamarin Canace "Nana". After half a year we were offered co-owned fawn bitch from another good kennel and that is how we got our first real broodbitch CH Faxidan Alexsandra. Our first litter (4 puppies) were born 1990 out of "Nana" and Swedish-import Airways On Target. Out of that litter came our first homebred Champion Dogiwogin Empire and his brother Elwood, who took two CAC:s. After that we have bred over 35 National Champions (and many of them have more than just one CH with their name: Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Estonian, Latvian, Greek...) and couple of International Champions and not forgetting the BIS, BISS and group-placed dogs. You get more information about DW breedings from the dogpages/links. All that has been done with VERY LIMITED BREEDING, about a litter per year or two. And don`t forget, my dogs are mainly companions and do the shows only limited basics. I imported some Danes from USA and one of them proved to be very special fawn boy - CH Quaker Hill`s Get Serious "Mikey". His bloodlines ( f.e. Sandale, Sheridane, Reanns) seemd to be just perfect to my big & strong bitch-lines. He produced excellent puppies and he was the Top Stud Dane in Finland 1996, 1997 and 1998. "Mikey" showed over 20 BIS-placed and mainly BIS progeny classes in all breed shows - he is the current recordholder in Dane Studs. His progeny class was BOB- class in 1998 World Winner Dog Show. Fawn Swedish import INT CH Diplomatic`s Sent To Dogiwogi "Svantte" also showed his progeny classes and did well. He won the Top Dane Stud competition in 1999 and 2000 - tradition seems to go on. Not only imports but also exports have proven themselves. Junior World Winner & Amsterdam JW-02 Dogiwogin SĀ“On Ludvig XIV Yacanto was TOP STUD in the UK 2006 & 2008 and his sister Grand Ch. produced lovely puppies in Philippines - only to mention some of them.

Also the females have done well. The brood bitch of the year competition has been won by our "ladies" many times. It is not easy task for a bitch to be a producer AND a showdog - but our girlies have made that true ! For instance Int CH DW Magica De Spell won this competition year 2000 - and her mother won it 1996. 1999 the winner was CH Dogiwogin Shewolf Swing. I want to mention Multi CH DW Fricka Flicka and her sister Fin Ch DW Fatima Fasolt - both Specialty Show winners (Sweden and Greece) and Fatima even in the age of 6-years. Both ladies also well known of their producing quality. Year 2000 was surprising, I decided to have a BLACK (out of blue mother) Dane from USA - Mrs Teresa La Brie let me have gorgeous black bitch puppy out of excellent bloodlines (Longo`s & her own) - and lovely "Dana" arrived to Finland. CH & Winner WYSIWYG Doris Dogiwogi V Longo was mated artificially year 2002 with GB CH Berevale Gilpin "Wesley" (bloodlines Buitengebeuren & their own) - only one male puppy - blue ! This puppy developed to be the top blue Finnish bred male in only couple of years but tragically we lost her mother Dana as well this blue boy Bono much too young. These Danes have the temperament & breedtype! Same breedtype was also seen in Int Ch Hoppingham`s Sardi`s Dream of AJ - a harlie bitch who was BOB in Specialty Show 2003 under breed specialist - she was bred with Top Winning harlie Multi Ch Multi W Blockbuster von Schƶntal, just to test black&white.

1999, after 9 years of hard work and commitment and after 10 litters - Dogiwogin was rewarded by the HIGHEST BREEDER AWARD in Finland by Finnish Kennel Club ,called "Vuolasvirta-prize". Through the years our Breeders & Progeny-classes came famous. It was not easy to gather a breeders class, by that time one need to have at least 4 dog out of at least two different litters -and they all need to have at least "excellent" at that day in the same show. Over years Dogiwogin showed more than 50 BIS & BIS-placed breeders classes. It was no wonder that this kennel was ranked 6th in Finnish Kennel Club Breeder of the Year contest 1996 and 10th 1999 - and that is all-breed system. The Breeder of the Year in GD:s - well, many of those titles. If thinking statistics, in the end of 1998 over 40 % of DW`s over 2-years old (you need to be at least 2-year old before you can finish your CH in Finland) breedings were at least Finnish Champions. Quality over quantity really makes the point in small homekennel. Nowadays Dogiwogin breeds a Dane litter every 3-4th year - just to keep my closest friends & me in Danes ; ) Nowadays I have cut showing a lot as IĀ“m licenced as FCI international dog show judge - having licence to judge over 50 breeds from group 2 & 5. Of course Auli is a specialist for Great Danes & German Pinschers and has been judging in Australia, USA, Estonia, Sweden and Finland. And not only that, IĀ“m also field trial judge for hunting breeds and at autums I spend my time in fields & forests.

Some of the Dane owners have been WORKING with their Danes. Many of my breedings have gained excellent results in temperament tests and obedience trials. Also agility and tracking has been part of their lives. Dogiwogin Laodicea has passed Working Dog tests (BH-test) and Dogiwogin Prince was the FIRST MALE Dane to do so. Laodicea has her own homepages, TAKE A LOOK from the link site. There is nothing a Dane can`t do if the owner puts some effort to it !

I consider carefully the new puppy buyers and they will get ALL the attention & advices they need - to raise a lovely Great Dane with Top temperament and sound construction. Of course when exporting the dog, the telephone and e-mail are in every day use if necessary !
